We’re having a baby in 3 days. How do I know this? Due to Will not wanting to come out (ever) we have a c-section scheduled for Thursday. It is technically 2 days before my due date, but as of last appointment NOTHING is moving with baby 2 so there’s a very good chance I would go over my due date again. (If I have the baby before Thursday everyone reading this can remind me how wrong I was). I have no interest in going over my due date, growing a bigger baby, and having another long labor ending in a c-section, so say what you may, but Thursday is baby day!
In the meantime I’ve been keeping predictably busy. The weather has been great and we’ve gotten out in the yard to re-edge several flowerbeds, plant some spring flowers, and build some garden boxes in order to plant most of our spring seeds. My goal is to have everything growing without my help sooner than later since a certain newborn will demand my attention very soon. I think the flower beds are greatly improved just by lifting the edging stones that have sunk into the dirt. I can still do most of the work with a hand-spade, but have resorted to having Jason do anything that requires a full size shovel or carrying 60lb bags of sand. Jason has been known to tell me “I can finish this project during my paternity leave” and I explain to him that the point is that much like Will “I do it myself”, meaning I want to help with said projects and we need to do them NOW. Jason has been a pretty good sport although I’ve worked him through some pretty long weekends. My version of helping has progressively involved more heavy lifting from Jason and more resting for me. Such is the final month of pregnancy I guess. Planting seeds just makes me happy though, so although spring weather may suggest waiting another week or two, I’ve decided to take my chances and plant a little early this year. Hopefully I can watch my seeds grow from a blanket under the apple tree while Will runs around our recently fenced in back yard. Speaking of recently fencing the yard, Lee was a great sport and came up on several separate days to help engineer fence and gates to connect the gaps between the sides of our house and the existing backyard fence. After running out of time on day one, and getting rained out on day 2, the project was completed on day 3. William was really impressed with our new fence right up until he realized its purpose is to keep him from running out towards the street with his push-toys. Happy Mama, unhappy William! Also in keeping with Baxter traditions, our fence and garden box materials were a combination of supplies from the KSL classifieds, the home depot scrap lumber pile, Lee’s garage, leftover fence slats from our old house, a piece of lumber picked out of a ditch, and an old piece of Jason’s childhood sandbox. I think all of our spring projects have cost us less than $200–happy Jason AND happy wife. It might be worth noting we did end up buying a few ‘new’ supplies such as screws, a few pavers, and several bags of sand…turns out it is quite difficult to find these items by the side of the road.
We had a belated get-together for Will’s birthday at the end of March and the weather held out OK for the day. We gathered together as many of the 2nd cousins as we could find and they seemed to enjoy playing in the yard. I look forward to more gatherings like this throughout the summer. Will thoroughly enjoyed the company and continued to ask for birthday cake for several weeks. About the time he forgot about birthday cake, the Easter activities began at daycare and everything became about candy. He had fun decorating a bunny, dying eggs, and hunting for plastic eggs in their yard. On Easter, we made a small basket for him and he got some new toys from Grandma Marion and Grandpa Lee as well. I was glad that this year we went pretty easy on the candy, it is hard to reason with a 2-year old about how much candy is enough. I am starting to notice a distinct love of chocolate and cheese that makes me realize he carries some of my genetics.
Happy belated Easter!
