Try Harder…

Only 3 blog posts last month. 🙁 I guess that’s life with a newborn. This month I’m going to try harder. Maybe aim for a post each week? I know that 4 posts isn’t a heck of a lot more than 3, but at least I’m starting off on the right foot by posting on May 1st. We will see how many of them I end up typing one-handed while nursing.

At the end of April we had some 80 degree weather and Jason spent the better part of a day getting our tomatoes, pumpkins, and melons planted out into the garden where they are joining the carrots, lettuce, and peas we started earlier. Unfortunately for me, Will was having a crabby day and the stroller walk only put him to sleep for about 20 minutes, so I helped plant a sum total of 5 tomato plants. Thankfully Jason also likes to garden, so the job still got done. (Honestly it was a little hot out for my tastes that day anyway and it probably saved me from a massive afternoon sunburn). As it always goes, we had one cold snap since then and the jury is still out if the tenderest of the plants–the melon–is going to pull through. I have terrible luck with melons; the fact that we even had edible fruit off them last year was a near miracle, and I can’t remember if those plants were started from seed, or if we gave up and got some from a greenhouse. Jason also spent time planting sunflowers and beans in the flowerbed behind the house that I have mostly given up on. The sunflowers make the most sense…I hope they seed out and self-start next year. The bed is on the south side of our house and during our hot summer days it could really use the shade. The only thing currently in the bed is some ornamental grass which ‘could’ grow up to 4 or 5 feet in height. I say ‘could’ because I’m assuming that kind of growth is assumed in conditions with appropriate water/heat/light/soil instead of in the neglected area under the drip-line of our house. Last year we planted sunflower seeds there and it was so wet they didn’t even germinate. NOT ONE! The fact that we achieved sprouting this year is a huge step up already.

In baby news, Will is now in his 6th week. We’re getting daily smiles and more interaction all the time (that first smile sure did make me cry!). I’ve been trying to fatten him up a bit but with his genetics I have all but given up hope of ever seeing any pudgy leg rolls on this guy. The pudgiest thing on the whole baby is his cheeks. It’s not for lack of feeding, and it will be interesting to see what his weight and length are at his 2 month visit. I have put some decent mileage on our stroller in April, getting out for hour long walks probably 3 days a week. Will is mostly cooperative in these adventures. I always make sure he’s fed and clean/dry when we head out, and then I just hope for the best. If anyone sees me booking it home with screaming coming from a stroller rest assured I really did try and I’m not just out to torture him. I hope the weather continues to cooperate so that it is not too hot to continue our afternoon walks. Lately we’ve also been getting more sleep that is *cough* somewhat *cough, cough* more predictable. 3 out of the last 4 nights he has gone for a 5-6 hour block at night. I have my fingers and toes crossed while writing this as to try not to break the trend. I realize we will have nights where this isn’t the norm, but this mama sure finds that she is more patient and productive when better rested. The only sleeping problem I’m having is that every little noise wakes me up or keeps me awake, and after being trained to wake up every 3 hours, I find myself waking up automatically at these intervals. I’m going to guess this is a fairly common issue for most new moms. I feel like I should steal Will’s white noise maker (the ‘sleepy sheep’ as Jason calls it) and put it in our room.

This month we are also gearing up for a trip to WI to visit and for Will to meet the family. I am slightly TERRIFIED of travelling with a 2 month old. Any suggestions for air travel with a child that age would be greatly appreciated. I also know that packing will be difficult as I will be tempted to bring everything including the kitchen sink. Thankfully Jason will be along to help. I can’t believe I was crazy enough to originally consider travelling alone our first time out.

The only thing that scares me more than air travel with a 2 month old, is finding daycare for an 11 week old. I am planning to head back to work at the beginning of June. I have a promising lead (I think) for a daycare lady right at the end of our block and I’m really hoping that works out. If it doesn’t I will be at square one, and need to make a bazillion phonecalls pronto. Maybe staying in denial will prolong the time until I go back to work. I do miss my coworkers however, and don’t think I’m ready to be a stay at home mom fulltime just yet. From the sounds of it, my coworkers also miss me…if proposing bribes to get me to come back early is a sign of being missed. 🙂

Congrats to Misty, Leah, Sarah, Leann, Dustin, Tara, and soon Vanessa who all have had, or will have, babies in this crazy 2 month window. It has been fun to compare notes with all the moms (and dads).

Happy (belated) birthdays to all of the folks I neglected to send cards to this spring. Needless to say it was a little crazy for a couple months.

Last but not least, Happy 36th anniversary to my wonderful parents!

You didn’t think I’d leave you hanging without a picture did you? 😉 Take Care!
